Fire & Exit Doors – Emergency Door Compliance & Safety Solutions

Fire and Exit Doors play a critical role in protecting building occupants and controlling the spread of fire during an emergency. Ensuring these doors are properly installed, accessible, and regularly maintained is a key part of building compliance in Australia.

What are Emergency Fire Doors?

Emergency Fire Doors are a specialized door that is designed to assist building occupants in exiting the building in a safe manner in the event of an emergency. Emergency Fire Doors are made from special fireproof material and they often lead to a fire-proof stairwell or exit that can be used to guide people inside the building to exit safely.

In large commercial buildings like hospitals, Fire Doors ensure the fire does not spread to multiple areas of the building and can be contained to one area while people are able to exit to a safe location.

Different Types of Emergency Doors

Fire Door – a door that is made from fire-rated material and leads to a fireproof stairwell or tunnel that can guide people to exit the building. The purpose of this door is to stop the fire from spreading to the building’s emergency exits

Exit Door – a door that allows for the emergency evacuation of a building. Non-fire Exit Doors do not need to be fire-rated.

Path of Travel Door – A door in the path of travel to a building exit which leads to a Fire Door or Exit Door. The Path of Travel Door is generally an internal building door which must be easily opened without a key and with low effort. A series of Path of Travel Doors should lead to an Exit Door or a Fire Door that leads to a fireproof exit path.

Fire & Exit Door Maintenance and Compliance

There are a range of Building Compliance requirements relating to Emergency Fire Doors and all Fire Doors must be maintained in good operational condition.

Some Emergency Fire Door requirements include:

  • The door must have a push bar or handle that can be pushed or pulled down easily by all occupants with minimal force. They need to be able to be operated in an emergency where the user may have burns or injuries.
  • Exit doors must be able to be pushed open outwards by anyone carrying or assisting another person.
  • Aisles and exit paths must be easily accessible without obstructions.
  • A Fire Exit Door can be locked from the outside but must be fitted with an emergency push bar (or other emergency access device) to allow occupants inside the building to escape quickly without the use of a key.

Other requirements include maintaining clear signage of exit doors and all passageways along exit routes with Emergency Exit Lighting. All buildings must have at least one Fire Exit on every floor of a building and large properties may require additional exits.

Fire & Exit Doors FAQs

What’s the difference between a Fire Door and an Exit Door?

A Fire Door is fire-rated and prevents fire spread, while an Exit Door is designed for safe egress but may not be fire-rated.

Do Fire Doors need to be tested regularly?

Yes. Fire Doors must be inspected and maintained to ensure hardware, seals, and structure remain effective and compliant.

Can Fire Doors be locked?

They can be locked from the outside but must allow keyless exit from inside via a push bar or similar device.

What are Path of Travel Doors?

These are internal doors leading to a final exit. They must be easy to open, unobstructed, and part of the continuous path of egress.

How do I know if my Exit Door is compliant?

Our team will inspect it for outward opening, ease of operation, correct signage, and access clearance per building codes.

What’s required for door hardware?

Emergency doors must have hardware that can be operated quickly and easily, even by injured occupants.

Can you install exit signage and lighting as well?

Yes, we offer integrated solutions that include compliant signage and emergency lighting for all exit routes.

How many Fire Exit Doors does my building need?

At least one per floor is required; larger buildings may need more. We assess this as part of your compliance check.

Do Fire Doors help contain smoke?

Yes, fire-rated doors are designed to block both fire and smoke, improving safety and evacuation conditions.
